So the social network, Facebook, has decided to change things up again huh? At their f8 conference they announced there’s now a ticker where you can see all the great food all your friends are currently eating and a timeline where you can track all of your favorite foods. For instance, when you took the wise words of El Big Snackero himself and hustled your bustle down to Dannyboy’s for their barbeque buffet – boy did that photo of you dowsed in barbeque sauce and covered in napkins get a lot of “likes” and comments! Well thanks to the stalk..er, social networking boys you’ll be able to relive all those great moments at the click of a button.

So keep your eyes peeled, your ears to the ground as the Big Snacker will keep you up to date. And always, keep a fork handy.

Food U is back in session and there’s a worm in this here apple. What say we learn a little?

Did you know when Twinkies were first introduced their shelf life was only 2 days. However, since then they have managed to increase that time to 25 days thanks to chemical injected into the diary products and the air-tight packaging. There are now over 500 million Twinkies produced every year, each baking for 12 minutes at a time.

Did you also know why apricots are a great snack? Coming from China and through Europe, they are an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Plus a serving of 3 medium-sized apricots has just 50 calories, tastes ultra sweet and is rich in beta-carotene.

In the spirit of the back-to-school season, yours truly – The Big Snacker – has recently completed my Useless Facts class at Food U. I thought I’d share a few of the (chicken) nuggets with the great HutchEats folks:

The color “Orange” was named after the fruit. Seems logical enough, but the word itself came from the Spanish word “naranja”. English-speaking persons began using the word commonly during the 16^th century. The word it replaced, “geoluhread”, meant “yellow-red”.

Soda, pop, coke, why all the names for a soft drink? While “soft drinks” now mean a carbonated beverage, that wasn’t always the case. Traditionally drinks were separated in two categories: “Soft drinks” referred to drinks without copious amounts of alcohol, while those that did contain alcohol were referred to as “hard drinks” (as in Ethel finds them a bit difficult to put down). Manufacturers of these flavored, carbonated beverages decided to agree on “soft drinks” to avoid the confusion of different names in different regions.

Yeah, I reckon the boys at the Science-of-Taste Lab are keeping busy with the latest in HutchEats specials. Linguini has been scoring high when placed on the Italian Scale-‘o-Flavor and the fine folk at The Polo will be serving it up hot on their Wednesday Night Special. Let’s leave the caliente caloric intake alone during the mid-day though – stop in to Allie’s for the delicious Quiche’ and Salad to tickle your taste buds and keep you in the cool.

Whew – what a week! This here weather makes folks like yours truly, el Big Snacker himself, appreciate the cool confines of my favorite eateries. I mean to tell you it is so hot I saw a chicken cross the road and lay a fried egg, right there in the ditch. It’s so hot that birds are using potholders to pull worms out of the ground. Which is really great they have that new “winged-fit” and moisture-wicking. Neat feature for the flying foul ‘round these parts.

Now I could go all day about the great outdoors but let’s turn that attention back to lunch! See ya’ll out there!
